Join artist Stacy Minch as she shows us her easy, affordable set up for painting on location. Whether it’s while visiting another artist’s studio or in the mountains doing plein air painting, having a quick and lightweight set up is important. One of the biggest obstacles artists face when starting their artistic journey is acquiring all of the supplies they need. Between paints, brushes, panels, and easels costs can quickly add up. This setup can get you going for probably under $200.

When shopping for a tripod look for either aluminum or carbon fiber. They will be the most lightweight and sturdy. Also look for a ball head because it will be easy to adjust the viewing angle to avoid glare while painting. On the top of the tripod shoe she fastened an iPad holder that is used for filming. It is extendable and lightweight and holds her panels securely. The next essential thing to have is a palette. Stacy uses disposable paper palettes that make clean up really easy.

To help extend the life of your paint and keep costs down even more, Stacy shows us several different ways to store any unused paint after your session to take home.

Her entire setup can fit into a tote bag and is very lightweight making travel very easy and efficient. So having these easy supplies will get you started on your artistic journey!
