3 Quick Tips for Character Design

Duration:   9  mins

Description

Character designer Gerardo Escamilla gives us three quick tips for creating more compelling character design.

The first tip is breaking symmetry. Usually when we draw a human figure or face we do it in equal parts, but with character design it’s fun to break the symmetry. He demonstrates this concept with a portrait, resulting in more attractive, dynamic shapes.

The second tip is to avoid shape repetition. Sometimes when we draw we tend to draw the same shapes over and over again. He demonstrates this by creating an arm using all circles. The end result is not very appealing. Instead he breaks up the arm using different shapes, resulting in a better visual design.

The third tip is about balance. Usually when we draw a silhouette we tend to draw it evenly, but what would happen if we pushed the balance to the limit? Again, it results in a more appealing design. He demonstrates this by creating a character that is dynamic and interesting using this principle.

Putting these concepts into practice will eventually lead to better results.

Hello, welcome to this extra video. In this class, we will be covering three quick tips on how to draw a more compelling character design. So let's go. Number one, breaking symmetry. Usually, when we draw human figure or human face, we tend to do it in even parts. But for character design, it's a different story. What would happen if I break symmetry and I break proportion? Have fun with this. You see this side is a little bit bigger than this one and I completely broke the shape. This will result into a way more attractive visual shape, don't you think? Now I'm just gonna clean the line art. Point number two, avoid shape repetition. Sometimes when we draw, we tend to draw the same shape over and over again, kind of like this. Another example, take a look at this arm design. If I do this, the final result will turn into something not very appealing. So instead, try something like this. For example, try to draw with different shapes. Look how this results into a way more appealing visual design. Number three, balance. This one is very similar to the previous point, but not quite exact the same thing. Usually, when we draw a silhouette, we tend to pilot in an even silhouette. Instead, try to take this to the limit. And again, this will result in a more appealing design. Let's try to put this into practice into an actual character. Look how the silhouette is way more interesting, even though we don't have any details yet. Let's try to add some. So putting these concepts into practice will eventually lead to better results. So hope you find these useful, and see you later.
